Founded in 1856, Banque Internationale à Luxembourg (BIL) is the oldest multi-business bank in Luxembourg. It issued its first banknotes in the year it was created and retained this privilege until the introduction of the Euro. The bank has always played an active role in financing Luxembourg’s economy.
BIL is among the country’s top three banks and offers retail, private, corporate and institutional banking as well as treasury and financial market services. In addition, BIL Group subsidiaries in Luxembourg also offer specialized services: Belair House (family office), BIL Manage Invest (alternative fund management) and BIL Lease (leasing solutions).
Outside Luxembourg, BIL has also dedicated wealth management offices in Switzerland and China as well as trading floors in Luxembourg and Zurich. It has opened its Beijing Representative Office in 2019 and has also presented in Hong Kong SAR since 2020. The Group has over 2,000 employees. It is recognized as an Other Systemically Important Institution by the ECB.
BIL is currently owned by Legend Holdings - a leading diversified investment holding company that is headquartered in Beijing, China, and listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange – and the State of Luxembourg.

Luc Frieden has been the Chairman of the Board of Directors and a Member of the Board Strategy Committee and the Board Risk Committee of Banque Internationale à Luxembourg, S.A. (BIL) since April 2016.
Luc Frieden is a qualified lawyer (avocat à la Cour) and a partner at Elvinger Hoss Prussen, one of the largest Luxembourgish business law firms. He also serves as Chairman of the Luxembourgish Chamber of Commerce, sits on the Board of the Luxembourg Stock Exchange, and President of Eurochambres, the association of European Chambers of Commerce and Industry.
Luc Frieden was a member of the Luxembourgish Government from 1998 to 2013, his positions included Minister of Justice, Minister of Treasury and Minister of Finance. Over the years, he played a key role in developing Luxembourg into a leading international financial center.
After leaving the Luxembourgish Government, Luc Frieden held various positions in the banking industry, including Vice Chairman of Deutsche Bank Group in London and Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Deutsche Bank Luxembourg SA.
Luc Frieden is a Luxembourgish national and graduated in law from the University of Paris I Panthéon-Sorbonne, the University of Cambridge and Harvard Law School. He speaks fluently Luxembourgish, English, French and German and has a basic knowledge of Dutch.
